CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

My feet stomped on Ah Kim’s porch. Little clumps of dirt bounced off of them landing on the wall. I opened the door and walked slowly into the house dropping my jacket on the floor next to his settee. A bouquet of late yellow roses gave off a sweet scent in the warm room. I had been up for days.

I had taken to dressing like a man. It was safer for my late night searches around town. My boots were crusted with mud; one pants leg was twisted, stuffed into the top of the boot, the other hung loose around my ankle.

Ah Kim looked took a long look at me. He motioned for me to sit.

I sat quietly turning my gold wedding band around on my finger. The sapphire in the center had dirt encrusted around it. My nail scrapped the stone while I tried to hold back my tears. My chest rose with a long shaky breath, panic engulfed me.

Outside the sound of the whistle from the mills competed with those of the trains pounding out their warnings and messages as they traversed the Comstock taking their precious cargo of gold, silver and supplies in and out of town.

Ah Kim didn’t say a word. He handed me a small cup of hot black tea.

One hand held my face, covering my mouth. The sweat on my palm stung my lips. I sat eyes wide chewing on the side of my finger.

Ah Kim stood behind me, he gently removed my cap laying it down on the soft blue settee; his fingers loosened my hair pins, allowing my hair to fall around my shoulders.

His gentle touch unleashed a torrent of emotions from me. “For five days now, I have looked everywhere for Collin. He said he had some business to take care of the day after Katie’s birthday. He promised, he said he would be home for dinner. I don’t even know who he was supposed to meet. I don’t even know where he was going. Do you? I am so scared. Did he tell you who he was going to meet?” Heavy warm tears filled up my eyes spilling down my face.

“I told you yesterday, and the day before and the day before that. I have no idea where he is or who he was going to meet. If I knew I would tell you. Have you slept at all?” He moved around to face me, his hand moved mine away from my face, he held on to it.

“A bit here and there.”

“And what of Katie? Is she all right?”

“She is fine, she is with Meg.”

“Collin is a strong man. I am sure he will come home.”

“But when? I have such a horrible feeling about this. I don’t know how to find him. Do you think we could find him if we have a séance? A real séance?”

“You cannot chase a shooting star.”

“But I can. Something is not right. I don’t know what. He would never leave without Katie or me.
